Plot: After being abandoned together at the same church, Asta and Yuno have never been apart. They made a bet when they were younger that they would battle it out to become the next Emperor Magus.

After being abandoned together at the same church, Asta and Yuno have never been apart. They made a bet when they were kids that they would battle it out to see who would be the next Wizard King. But as they grew older, the disparities in their skills became increasingly apparent.

Asta had no magic at all, so he trained his body as much as he could to try to make up for it. Yuno, on the other hand, was a prodigy at controlling and using magic. When Yuno and Asta were fifteen years old, they surprisingly received a Grimoire with a four-leaf clover emblem on it, although Asta, regrettably, did not receive any Grimoires at all.

Nevertheless, Yuno was given a five leaf clover grimoire—a "black clover"—when he was threatened and the reality about Asta's power became apparent. With the same objective in mind, the two buddies are now setting out into the world.

A poor child named Asta is driven to become his nation's next Wizard King. The issue is that Asta possesses zero magic in a world where magic rules everything and defines one's place in society. But he gains entry into the Magic Knights, the kingdom's elite defensive force, thanks to his unwavering will to become the best in the realm. He and his brother set out on a quest to become the most powerful and well-respected men in the realm.
